The world we live in is fast paced to say the least, simply consider your daily schedule to emphasize this point. And for the average young adult, balancing a full college curriculum, internships, and leading student organizations, is a full time commitment. And despite how hard we try, the human body can only function for so long. The human body can only be productive for so long. However many young college students have found a short cut to push their bodies further. It is common practice on many college campuses to take prescription stimulants, most notably Adderall. By doing so many young students stimulate their central nervous systems and are able to stay awake for hours on end. The practice has become so common place that the Adderall has become known as “The Study Drug”.
Prescription stimulants, Adderall included, is common for treating ADHD symptoms in young children. With proper physician supervision the use of prescription stimulants can help treat the symptoms of ADHD and promote self esteem, cognition, social and family cohesion. However the concern comes when these prescriptions are abused, especially by those who do not have a prescription. By taking pharmaceuticals with no doctor supervision young college students are taking part in this common form of self medicating.
It is a time to see old friends and to participate in a group recovery session sponsored by the BEACHCOMBER. For me it is a chance to see how BEACHCOMBER ALUMNI are doing. This past Wednesday I saw 3 individuals that I had not seen in a while. The two women and one male had gone through the BEACHCOMBER in May of this year. The collective change in the 3 individuals was striking. They were fresh faced, healthy and they were obviously enjoying life.
I had picked up one of the individuals at the airport and had seen the other 2 their first morning at the BEACHCOMBER. I remember how sick they were their first few days and how hard the therapists worked with the three to stabilize them. Their disease their addiction was destroying them.
Five months later the three were back and they had transformed themselves. Their addictions were no longer controlling their lives. They were controlling their addictions. The difference was easy to see and brought a smile to all of us here at the BEACHCOMBER who remembers what they looked like in May when they started their road to recovery.

Last weekend June 10- 12 Sandra Champa, Trey Crier and Tony Foster all therapists from the BEACHCOMBER attended a 3 day training session on EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or as it is sometimes called Tapping Therapy was developed by Gary Craig a few years ago. EFT therapy is an exciting new holistic approach to helping the addict or alcoholic recover from their addiction. This therapy is used to reduce stress, anxiety, pain, phobias and insomnia. EFT therapy works with some of the same body points as acupuncture and similar to acupuncture it uses the body’s own inherent energy to reduce pain and stress. Unlike acupuncture once a client has been taught the technique they can use it the rest of their lives in their recover. Many times people in the early stages of recovery require medication to sleep or control anxiety. Our goal is to use holistic therapy such as EFT to reduce the use of medications prescribed for emotional problems.
Trey Crier, one of the BEACHCOMBER therapists wasted no time in putting this new therapy to use. In fact his Tuesday morning group therapy consisted of a group session on Emotional Freedom Techniques. Trey said afterward, “It was amazing to see the joy and happiness around the room at the end of the session”. After Tuesday’s positive outcome Trey used EFT therapy in his aftercare group session for BEACHCOMBER alumni on Wednesday afternoon. Trey said,” we were going through the EFT therapy in the group session and a pack of cigarettes was tossed in the middle of the room. The session was so powerful that someone had decided to give up smoking while in the session”.
The first few weeks of recovery can be very stressful to the recovering addict or alcoholic. It is through holistic therapies such as EFT that the staff at the BEACHCOMBER is able to reduce this stress and let the client concentrate on recovery from their addiction.

The special qualities of the ocean and beach here in Delray Beach are why our founder located the Beachcomber

This time of year is a special time of year on the beach adjacent to the BEACHCOMBER. It is sea turtle nesting season which brings the large female sea turtles to the beach to lay their eggs. Three species of sea turtles all off of which are on the threatened or endangered list lay their eggs on the beach here. The three species of sea turtles that can be seen on the beach just steps from the BEACHCOMBER are the Leatherback, Green Sea Turtle and the Loggerhead turtle. The female sea turtles come out on the beach late at night to lay their eggs. Last night Wednesday, June 15, 2011 was a special night as our director saw 9 sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach.
The special qualities of the ocean and beach here in Delray Beach are why our founder located the BEACHCOMBER here 35 years ago. The first few days and weeks of recovery from addiction do drugs and alcohol are very stressful. We believe a tranquil and beautiful environment increases the chances for recovery from this terrible disease.

An alumnus of the Beachcomber told me the other day “I woke up one morning during the second week of my stay at the Beachcomber and I could hear the waves crashing on the beach from my cabin. I came to the realization at that time that a sober life could be beautiful. I had been drinking for so long that I forgot that life could be very good without alcohol.”
The fact that people just beginning their recovery need to see the beauty in sobriety is why Jim Bryan Sr. located the Beachcomber on A1A next to the Atlantic Ocean in Delray Beach, Florida 35 years ago. It is also the reason he planted the various palms, flowering trees and shrubs on the grounds of the Beachcomber. Jim Bryan knew that the pleasant and beautiful surroundings of the Beachcomber and the sounds of the waves breaking on the sand would consistently whisper the message “A sober life is a beautiful life”. At the Beachcomber we still adhere to those principles. We take pride in the surroundings and grounds of the Beachcomber. Our clients are recovering from a terrible addiction to drugs or alcohol and we feel it is important to surround them in a beautiful setting which is conducive to their recovery

OxyContin addiction has increased many times over in recent years, creating an addiction which is as severe as Heroin, Percodan or Percocet addiction because they are all derived from opium; and no less severe because it is a synthetic drug. Older Teens and Young Adults are both becoming more at risk with drugs like in schools and medicine cabinets. A facility where doctors and licensed counselors can aide withdrawal with treatment can address new behavioral skills for full recovery and assist in the continued abstinence there after.

It has been shown that Yoga, Tai-Chi, Light and Sound therapy Stimulation and meditation can help relieve anxiety. Addicts will react with extreme behaviors due to pent up emotions, anger, self-loathing, shame, anxiety trauma or other negative emotions during recovery and re-education. An addict will engage in these destructive behaviors as they do not know how to handle these emotions appropriately. Holistic treatments and practices teach an addict how to relax and control their emotions with additional aid of their opiates or stimulants.

Yoga can help an addict learn self control, help their self confidence and improve their physical health. The combination of postures breathing and meditation helps to aid the recovering addict in dealing with the stresses of recovery.

For the addict acupuncture releases endorphins or the body’s natural pain relievers. The release of endorphins has shown to have the affect of temporarily relieving withdrawal symptoms.

The benefits of practicing Tai-Chi include: Improved strength, conditioning, coordination, and flexibility, reduced pain and stiffness, better balance and enhanced sleep and greater awareness, calmness, and overall sense of well being.

Clinical studies show that Light and Sound therapy Stimulation promotes significant reduction in stress and excessive tension while increasing, stress release, relaxation, personal realization and cognitive awareness, resulting in improved recovery ability.

At The Beachcomber the Holistic Approach applies to our total environment to help our patients deal with the symptoms of withdrawal. As an adjunct to our Vision Statement we must affirm adherence to the “holistic approach” from our founding in 1976. With more and more residential programs the holistic concept is regaining notoriety and so we recall our insightful beginning. It was a primary consideration with James A. Bryan when he drew upon his unique interpretations for addiction treatment. He then established that insightful process amid the natural beauty of Florida’s tropical climate.

Young people may use Ecstasy to improve their moods or get energy to keep dancing; however, chronic abuse of Ecstasy appears to damage the brain’s ability to think and regulate emotion, memory, sleep, and pain.

“G,” “Liquid Ecstasy,” “Georgia Home Boy” or Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) may be made in homes by using recipes with common ingredients. At lower doses, GHB can relax the user, but, as the dose increases, the sedative effects may result in sleep and eventual coma or death.

“Roofie” or “Roche” (Rohypnol) is tasteless and odorless. It mixes easily in carbonated beverages. Rohypnol may cause individuals under the influence of the drug to forget what happened. Other effects include low blood pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and stomach upset.

“Special K” or “K” (Ketamine) is an anesthetic. Use of a small amount of ketamine results in loss of attention span, learning ability, and memory. At higher doses, ketamine can cause delirium, amnesia, high blood pressure, depression, and severe breathing problems.

“Speed,” “Ice,” “Chalk,” “Meth” (Methamphetamine) is often made in home laboratories. Methamphetamine use can cause serious health concerns, including memory loss,

Bombarded by online ads, requests from active support groups and general media; young teens and children are constantly exposed to the idea that Marijuana-POT-is not only acceptable, but widespread and popular. Most teens feel peer pressure when confronted with Marijuana and succumb to the group mentality when presented with an offer to smoke. This is due mostly to the unfounded and confusing idea that this drug is harmless due to it growing naturally just about anywhere in the world along with the legalization in several countries and U.S cities.

With a long and storied history behind it, Marijuana has seen a resurgence of use and even medical recommendations through out the United States in recent years. When used with medical supervision marijuana has seen a rise in treatments for Cancer and Aids, unfortunately this has also provided casual users a method of bypassing laws for their own selfish purposes and encouraging widespread use in the U.S. While opinions differ and arguments can be made for both legalization and continued prohibition, what is lost to most politicians, activists and backers is that use is not propagating in the medical field alone, but with today’s youth in the form of abuse.

In fact Marijuana will adversely affect the average teen’s mental, physical and spiritual growth by increasing the amounts of dopamine the brain receives. Adolescence is a critical time for future brain development with findings that are yet another warning for adolescents who experiment with this type of drug use. The teen Marijuana abuser attempts to suppress reality and the angst of basic urges with the use of marijuana. This will lead to the underdevelopment of emotions, poor academic achievements, sports and other typical activities which would normally take place in a teen’s life and development.

Teens who have found themselves turning more and more to Marijuana to control daily stress and life in general typically have yet to learn any other form of release for stress and common day to day behavior. With this in mind Beachcomber founder James A. Bryan’s primary consideration when he drew upon his unique interpretations for addiction treatment was to establish an in-depth, professionally monitored holistic treatment center.

The” Holistic Approach” has always been at the forefront of treatment methods due to its spiritual reinforcement and emotional support system. Although dependence dictates how the process of treatment and recovery is applied, without holistic measures to support the mind and body withdrawal may become inevitable. Residents at The Beachcomber are offered close attention to body, mind and spirit as part of every day activity, so rarely do individuals note subtle changes taking place while a resident.

The values we accumulate over a lifetime define spirit and usually fall one-by-one as dependency grows more commanding. A teen’s urge to self-destruct is symptomatic of the addiction illness and this brings decline in spirituality which can lead to harder drugs and expanded addiction.
If instead of providing a teen with additional drugs to suppress the need for marijuana or to address what many parents feel is a deficit disorder, anxiety dysfunction or other termed “Youth Affliction” we focus our teens on natural methods of bypassing stress and dealing with everyday life, they will naturally overcome their addiction and continue with their “growing up”.

Spirituality is a clear component of The Beachcomber treatment program!
The body cures as a determined schedule of activities restores order and light to the darkened regions where chemical dependency had prevailed.
Along with Florida’s tropical climate & utilizing holistic methods such as Tai-Chi, Yoga, Acupuncture & Light Sound treatments along with a trained staff in a lush and peaceful environment, the Beachcomber has established itself as a leader in addiction treatment for all ages.

“To walk the walk and talk the talk” applies at The Beachcomber from the first day. At almost any location on the property tropic beauty strikes our vision. Then, in moments of serenity, we detect the rhythm of the surf or the splash of a nearby fountain. Such impressions are recalled in later years and the cry of sea birds may accompany us whenever we stroll on warm sands.
As the days unfold at The Beachcomber hearts and minds heal from the most devastating of experiences.

Meth or Methamphetamine is an extremely potent and dangerous stimulant that works within the central nervous system and affects the bodies neuro-chemical mechanisms that are responsible for regulating appetite, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, blood pressure, attention, mood and automatic responses such as alertness or alarm. In today’s society, we see an increasing number of habitual and first time users turning to meth as their initial drug due to peer pressure, availability and price.

Known on the street as “speed,” “meth,” “ice,” and “crystal,” it can be injected, smoked, snorted, or swallowed, providing a “high” that is intense and can last from eight to 24 hours. It has replaced cocaine, heroin, and marijuana as the drug of choice in many areas. Once addiction takes hold, there are currently no particular pharmacological treatments for dependence on amphetamine or amphetamine-like drugs behavioral intervention is the most effective treatment for crystal meth addiction.

There are also numerous treatment obstacles such as: paranoia, decreased social skills, delusions, depression, malnutrition, violence, aggression, permanent psychological problems, kidney and lung disorders, liver damage, hallucinations, and feeling of suicide.

To address the subject a Holistic Approach to human health is best when undertaking a long journey into both mental and physical recovery. Ancient wisdom often centered on “balance” in nature and the importance of body, mind and spirit working in consort with existing environments. Early societies found it essential to adjust to nature in every way and entire cultures were built on “holistic,” effects taking place around them.

The body cures as a determined schedule of activities restores order and light to the darkened regions where chemical dependency had prevailed. Moments of clear understanding bring healthy appetites and shared experiences in a homelike dining room where residents enjoy meals designed to restore health and bring feelings of comfort.

The values we accumulate over a lifetime define spirit and usually fall one-by-one as dependency grows more commanding. The urge to self-destruct is symptomatic of the illness and this brings decline in spirituality. As explained, The Beachcomber program is key to recovery and nothing is more important than restoring balance. The values once held must be revisited and a sense of order adjusted to meet progressive “recovery.”

In many instances, there was no awareness of the “whole being” and new overviews are required. The process begins as The Beachcomber program leads to new awakenings. Many thousands of former residents have experienced the mystery of our step-by-step, stage-by-stage restoration of values and appreciation for living.

In conclusion, crystal methamphetamine continues to plague our world and recovery from this hazardous drug proves to be among the most difficult habits to break. At The Beachcomber the Holistic Approach applies to our total environment in addition to traditional treatments to addiction we also offer Tai-Chi, Yoga, Acupuncture and Light-Sound Neurotherapy to help our patients deal with the symptoms of withdrawal.

That ideal has always applied at The Beachcomber and consequently we may have simply accepted it from the start. We have not stressed the Holistic Approach since it is truly engrained in the program we offer residents. Attention to body, mind and spirit is part of every day’s activity and rarely does an individual note subtle changes taking place while a resident. This becomes an accumulation of values and adjustments to “balance” designed in our program of recovery.

Tai-Chi & Drug Addiction

The Beachcomber Rehabilitation Center offers alternative support by using the ancient practices of Tai-Chi in order to assist our patients in establishing added release of stress caused by addiction recovery.

When an individual is engaged in drug addiction or alcohol abuse, their natural abilities to manage stress and tension are compromised. The longer the terms of addiction and abuse, the greater the impairment to these coping mechanisms. Once an individual stops using drugs or alcohol, their internal systems and chemistry remain out of balance and in turmoil as they try to reset without the sudden spikes of chemicals from which they have grown accustomed.

Originating as a Martial Art; Tai chi is a type of low-impact, weight-bearing, and relaxing exercise. Practiced in a variety of styles, Tai-Chi involves slow, gentle movements, deep breathing, and meditation. This meditation is sometimes called “moving meditation.”
Tai-Chi does much more for recovering addicts than basic exercise or meditation alone. This ancient health practice combine classical conditioning with visualization, breathing, and meditation to create a powerful complementary therapy for most maladies, including addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex and gambling. Large, clinical studies on the health benefits of tai chi are ongoing, but many who practice tai chi report heightened feelings of well-being along with a variety of other health benefits.

For example, research studies have shown that extensive drug use clogs the body with toxic debris which otherwise can lodge in the tissues for years. Tai-Chi’s active stimulation of the lymph system speeds up the physical recovery process, helping to remove impurities from the bloodstream. These impure toxins are some of the causes for natural unrest within the person, so by accelerating the release of these toxins through added alternative addiction treatment methods, individuals are provided a better chance to focus on recovery.

The benefits of practicing Tai-Chi include: Improved strength, conditioning, coordination, and flexibility, reduced pain and stiffness, better balance and enhanced sleep and greater awareness, calmness, and overall sense of well being.

The Beachcomber in Delray Beach, Florida offers a seasonal Ti-Chi program as part of a holostic recovery process. For more information and a free consultation please call us toll free at (877) 270-6226.
